BEHIND the team
Volunteers – the beating heart of IZA
The International Seamen's Home Antwerp can open its doors every day thanks to the dedication of our permanent welfare staff and the support of 22 enthusiastic and passionate volunteers.
These volunteers are the beating heart of our organization.
Together with us, they ensure that IZA remains accessible 7 days a week for the seafarers who dock in our port.
With their time, talent, and warm commitment, they truly make a difference: in the shop, during ship visits, at the Rolling Store, in organizing activities, and so much more.
Their commitment shows what connectedness and solidarity can mean.
For our sailors, they are often the first friendly face ashore — a sign that they are welcome here, far from home.
We are therefore particularly grateful to this group of volunteers, whose enthusiasm and passion not only make our work possible, but also contribute to the warm, hospitable atmosphere that characterizes IZA.
Together we make IZA a place where every sailor can feel at home.
José Oliveira
Welfare Officer
My family has been made up of generations of seafarers. Although I'm not a sailor myself, I proudly carry on their spirit. As a social worker at the International Seamen's Home in Antwerp, I want to be a pillar of support for seafarers, make their dedication visible, and give them recognition.
Bram Winkelmans
Welfare Officer
As an Assistant Welfare Officer at the International Seamen's Home in Antwerp, I want to make a positive impact. Thanks to my background in intercultural studies, I offer support and guidance to those who need it. I believe that with the right help, everyone can overcome their challenges.
Nandi Moyo
Welfare Officer
At IZA, I am exploring a new world with an open mind, ready to learn and give back to hard-working seafarers. It is a unique opportunity to grow while supporting those who give so much at sea.
